Academic Program
It is during the middle school years that young people
develop their commitment to learning and discover what
it means to be responsible, independent students. Long
Island Lutheran’s Middle School comprises students
in grades six through eight, guided by a team of teachers
who provide a stable and supportive atmosphere.
The middle school program is a three-year sequence in which
students study the five basic core academic subjects: English,
math, science, social studies, and foreign language. Additional
course work is provided in religion, art, music, library skills,
computer, health, and physical education. Because of the high
caliber of LuHi students and the academic challenge inherent
in our program, eligible middle school students can attain
high school credit in both math and foreign language.
The middle school academic program emphasizes a respect for
diverse learning styles, team and interdisciplinary teaching,
and varied experiences with cooperative learning, research,
and group presentations. This allows opportunities for students
to develop cognitive growth while incorporating exploratory
experiences for enrichment. Each student’s academic
program bridges the gap between self-contained classrooms
and departmental classrooms – making for a smooth transition
to our high school.
